Fly screens

Pollen screens: what should you consider?

Special pollen-filtering mesh helps reduce pollen entering through the screened opening while also protecting against insects. This is a separate property that cannot be attributed to every grey or black mesh.

Fresh air matters during pollen season too.

If pollen protection is your reason for choosing a screen, explain this from the start. The special mesh's performance matters as well as its colour and construction. Some versions use a coating to help capture pollen.

Performance depends on the product and conditions. A percentage from one manufacturer's test cannot be applied to all pollen-filtering meshes.

Light and airflow matter as well.

Greater protection should be balanced with visibility and airflow you find acceptable. Compare samples and ask for data on the specific version. A screen on your most frequently opened window should suit your daily habits.

Key points: “pollen-filtering” describes the purpose more accurately than a general promise of “allergy protection”.

Correct fitting and care.

The consultant must assess system compatibility and installation. Special mesh cannot work as intended if air enters through unscreened gaps.

Keep the care instructions: special coatings may need different cleaning from standard mesh. Do not apply one mesh's washing instructions to another.

Frequently asked questions

Is a standard fly screen anti-allergy?

No. Pollen protection must be specified for the particular mesh.

Will this mesh remove all pollen from my home?

No. It works at the screened opening and makes no promise about all indoor air or symptoms.
